Smoking reduces insulin absorption from subcutaneous tissue.

چکیده
The degree of glycaemic control in insulin-dependent diabetic patients is highly influenced by the rate of insulin absorption from subcutaneous tissue to blood. We have recently shown a correlation between subcutaneous blood flow and insulin absorption.' Smoking increases the concentration of catecholamines in the blood.2 In normal subjects inhaling cigarettes produces a transient rise in blood pressure and pulse rate and a fall in skin temperature. The peripheral vasoconstriction lasts from several minutes to more than one hour, and habitual smokers do not show tolerance to smoking by a decrease in these effects.3 The duration of peripheral vasoconstriction caused by smoking might, therefore, have an effect on insulin absorption. We tested this hypothesis.

متن کاملThe Association of Omentin Gene Expression in Visceral and Subcutaneous Adipose Tissues with Plasma Fatty Acids Profile and Dietary Fatty Acids
Introduction: Omentin, an adipokine, with anti-inflammatory effects reduces insulin resistance, and can hence, play an important role in prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The present study aimed to investigate the association of plasma and dietary fatty acids with gene expression of omentin in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues. Materials and Methods: Visceral and subcut...
متن کاملInsulin injection technique.
For many years after the introduction of insulin the recommended injection technique was to raise a skin fold and insert the needle at an angle of 45°. With the advent of shorter 12-13 mm needles these two instructions were no longer thought necessary; the belief was that a full depth perpendicular injection would allow consistent deposition of insulin into subcutaneous adipose tissue.' This te...
متن کاملAccelerating and improving the consistency of rapid-acting analog insulin absorption and action for both subcutaneous injection and continuous subcutaneous infusion using recombinant human hyaluronidase.
Rapid-acting insulin analogs were introduced to the market in the 1990s, and these products have improved treatment of diabetes by shortening the optimum delay time between injections and meals. Compared with regular human insulin, rapid-acting insulin formulations also reduce postprandial glycemic excursions while decreasing risk of hypoglycemia. However, the current prandial products are not ...
متن کاملThe effect of smoking cessation and subsequent resumption on absorption of inhaled insulin.
OBJECTIVE To assess the absorption profile of inhaled insulin in healthy, actively smoking subjects at baseline, after smoking cessation, and after smoking resumption and compare it with nonsmoking subjects. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Insulin pharmacokinetics and glucodynamics were measured in 20 male smoking subjects (10-20 cigarettes/day) and 10 matched nonsmoking subjects after receiving ...
